Contacts & hirelings
PCs can have a number of contacts equal to their CHA bonus. In addition, a character who joins a guild gains one (extra) guild contact. When a new slot opens for a contact, a PC must find and recruit one in the following way:
1. Select an NPC. If that person’s attitude toward the character is worse than helpful, adjust it. [diplomacy, favors, quests etc]
2. Once the NPC’s attitude is helpful, the player simply declares his intent to make that NPC a contact.
Low-level NPCs (5+ below the player’s lvl) become contacts immediately
Close-level NPCs (±5 of the player’s lvl) may need a service first.
High-level NPCs (5+ above the player’s lvl) will certainly require a quest first.
A contact’s behavior toward a PC falls somewhere between that of a cohort and a hireling. The contact won’t risk his life for the PC or accompany her on adventures, but he can provide info on request, influence other groups and organizations on the PCs behalf, or make a skill check – as long as doing so doesn’t cost any money. (If money is involved with the check, the PC must pay the expenses.)
